Ruggero Deodato

Behind some of the biggest modern horror classics is a calm and friendly man who learned the craft from directors like Roberto Rossellini, Joseph Losey and Sergio Corbucci. However, the name Ruggero Deodato will forever be associated with the macabre masterpiece Cannibal Holocaust, in which a small group of reporters go to the Amazon in search of the last remaining cannibal tribe, only to disappear without a trace. All that’s left are the reels of film they shot during their expedition, and their content goes beyond description. Presented as found footage, the film had an enormous influence on more recent box-office hits like The Blair Witch Project, Cloverfield and Paranormal Activity. But this horror cinema classic takes things much further. Underneath the horrific spectacle lies an intelligent critique of sensationalist media. Cannibal Holocaust left such a mark that we often forget that Deodato was quite the busy directorial bee. By inviting this Italian maestro, we hope to rectify this by projecting a few of his works, all of which are a testament to his talent and proof of his penchant for shocking audiences!

Ruggero Deodato is present at the festival from the 17th until the 18th of March and will personally introduce his films.

On Saturday the 17th there will be a Q&A after the show of "The Long Road Back from Hell".
